AROUND AND ABOUT
Located within the Pirin National Park, some 160kms from Sofia International Airport, Bansko is not only a state of the art ski resort but a burgeoning summer resort. It has recently been tipped in the press as the new Verbier. An Ian Woosnam championship golf course is under construction and the area is famous for hiking, hunting, mountain biking, riding and fishing.
Bansko is well placed to explore the Pirin Mountains and their attractive old villages famous for their thermal water springs spas with their healing and therapeutic qualities.
Golf
Set at the foot of the Pirin mountains in a valley surrounded by three mountain ranges this championship quality 6,800 yard par 72 course is set to be completed by Summer 2009. It has been designed by Ian Woosnam in conjunction with European Golf Design. The second 18 the Pines course is currently under construction.
Additional facilities will include a horse riding centre, a mini football pitch, volleyball and baskeball pitches and two tennis courts in addition to an array of shops and restaurants.
There are plans for 5 further course to be built in the region over the next 5 years.
Ski
According to the Ski Club of Britain Bansko is the “best developed ski resort in Eastern Europe" and an article recently in the Daily Mail describes it "as the hottest new ski resort on the planet." Igluski.com gives Bansko 17 stars and Val d’Isere 13 stars current as at February 2006. At the moment there are approximately 65km of slopes but there are plans to expand the slopes in the coming years to include over 200km.
Bansko enjoys up to 3m of snow cover per year and is reckoned to enjoy the best snow cover in Bulgaria. It has always been the resort of choice for Bulgarians and is the main resort which forms part of Bulgaria’s bid for the Winter Olympics 2014.
The lift system in Bansko is the most modern lift system in Europe having opened for service in December 2004.
The season is long and lasts from December to early May.
Mineral Springs
No country in the World has more thermal springs per kilometre than Bulgaria.
All scientific studies agree that in the uniqueness, variety and abundance of hydrothermal, bioclimatic, mud treatment, sea cure, and other health resources, Bulgaria ranks among the first in Europe.
It has some 500 deposits of mineral waters with over 1, 600 water sources. These are localised chiefly at the mountain foothills. Amongst the spa resorts of national significance are Sandanski and Momin Prohod. The spa towns date back to Thracian and Roman times and are within driving distance of Bansko.
Flora and fauna
Bulgaria has many regions with a truly remarkable bio-diversity. Contemporary natural vegetation demonstrates considerable ecological diversity. 12, 360 species have been found in its composition, of which 3, 700 are higher plants. The Bulgarian endemic plants, which are to be found nowhere else in the
world, number more than 250: Rila primrose, Balkan violet, Bulgarian blackberry, Rhodopean tulip etc. Forests abound with wild fruits, briars, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, mushrooms – all of them of proven flavour and of qualities that strengthen the body. There is also a great
diversity of herbs and healing plants.
Bulgaria’s fauna numbers some 13, 000 species, which is 14% of the total number of registered animal species in Europe. Rare mammal species are to be found in this country. Pelicans, stags, deer, does, wild goats, quails and pheasants inhabit reserves and hunting grounds.
A network of 3 national parks – Rila, Pirin, and the Central Balkan - has been set up (with a total area of 221, 252.2 hectares, 9 natural parks (over 180, 000 hectares, reserves, as well as 2, 234 protected territories and natural landmarks. Two of them, Pirin National Park and Sreburna biosphere reserve, have been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Together with 16 further biosphere reserves they offer wonderful conditions for photo-hunting, scientificand-cognitive tourism and hobby tourism.
