ABOUT PAMPOROVO SKI RESORT
Pamporovo is a pearl among all Bulgarian mountain resorts. It is situated in the heart of Rodopi Mountains, 260 km away from Sofia, 85km south of Plovdiv and 15 km away from the town of Smolian.
The climate is mild, influenced by Mediterranean air masses. The average temperature is 8.5°С throughout the year, the average snow cover is 140-150sm, the highest peak is Snezhanka- 1,926m. The winter is long but mild, with abundant snow fall. The average temperature for January is from 7°С to -2°С. The snow cover of Snezhanka peak stays till the end of May and offers excellent conditions for practicing various winter sports. Summers are cool with highest average daily temperatures for July of 18-19°С.
In Rozhen area is situated the National Astronomy Observatory, which is the largest scientific research complex in astrology and physics on the Balkans. It is annually visited by around 10,000 people from around the world. The observatory has a meteorological station. A new telescope Crown-graph, which will be observing the Sun’s crown is about to be in use soon.
In the Smolian Lake District a unique natural phenomenon is observed – the air contains negative ions, which has extremely positive effect on human health and powerfully energizes and recover people.
Because of the relief the sudden weather changes are not common for Pamporovo area. Avalanches are rare phenomenon as well therefore winter holiday-makers can safely and comfortably enjoy all winter sports.
Pamporovo is also an excellent place for summer holidays. It offers possibilities for mountain trekking along passages of different length and difficulty. At that place the two main trekking routs in the west part of Rodopi Mountains cross. They go along Chernatitsa, Perelishki and Prespanski peaks. There are excellent conditions for mountain biking, different off-road activities, hunting and ornithology.
The Rodopi Mountains attract a great number of Bulgarian and foreign tourists because of its interesting natural formations and beautiful sights. The Rodopi Mountains natural formations are not only locally unique, they are unique on a world scale as well. In the middle part of the mountains many Thracian and Roman fortresses are preserved, Roman roads, tombs, burial sites and sanctuaries have been excavated. Fortresses, churches, chapels, monasteries and public buildings from the middle ages have also been preserved in that region.
Caves
Near the town of Trigrad is situated the Trigrad gorge and three caves: Diavolskoto garlo (Devil’s throat), Yagodinska and Uhlovitsa. The vertical and horizontal cracking of the riolits has formed strange rock formations, which have been given descriptive names, according to their forms: The Hero, The Young Wife, The Female Falcon, The Orpheus Rock, The Big Wall, etc. One of the most impressing rock formations is the so called Marvelous Bridges near the village of Zabardo, not far away from the town of Chepelare.
Hunting and Fishing
Just above Smolian, in the direction to Pamporovo, the seven Smolian lakes are situated amphitheatrically. There are many mountain rivers as well, which together with the lakes offer excellent conditions for all-year-round fishing. The natural reserves Kormisosh, Zhenda and Rusalsko are situated in that region. They are a natural habitat of unique flora and fauna: local plants, which grow only there, wild boars, deer, wood-grouses and mouflons.
Ethnography
Shiroka Laka, Zlatograd and Smolian are ethnographical monuments of Bulgarian architecture from the Revival period (18th century AD) in the Bulgarian history. Krastova Gora countryside and the village of Bachkovo are ancient religious centres of the Christian faith in the Rodopi Mountains.

PERELIK SKI RESORT - FACTS & FIGURES:
The greatest ski resort in Eastern Europe called Perelik Ski Resort is one of the biggest projects on the Balkans involving several big investors and 255 million euro in its construction. It will link Pamporovo and Mechi Chal. For the first three years, 94 million euro will be invested for the construction of 24 new chair lift stations, with the capacity of 8,000 skiers per hour and ski courses with a common length of 55 km. Artificial snow facilities, 15 km long courses for ski-running and biathlon will also be built as well as a stadium. The whole area of the complex will be 2,190 hectares, situated between the villages of Gela, Stoikite, Stikal, Solishta and Mugla. Perelik Mountain is 2,190m high and its snow cover stays 45 days longer than that of Pamporovo.
Perelik project was granted a class A certificate, which is the highest one, by the Bulgarian Investments Agency. The project only envisages the construction of sports facilities, without hotels. Accommodation will be available in the Smolian Lake District and the district of Paikovski Livadi.
Temporary fast food constructions will be available, offering the tourists refreshments and the possibility to have some rest as well. New developments will be no more then 3-4 storeys tall and will have indoor parking lots. The project aims at creating possibilities not only for practicing winter sports but also for practicing different sports all-year-round, such as golf, cycling, paleontology and many more.
